Behind the Lens at One80 Place's 573 Meeting Street Ribbon Cutting

An afternoon volunteering with one of Charleston's most meaningful milestones.

Last Friday, I had the honor of volunteering as the photographer for One80 Place's ribbon cutting ceremony at 573 Meeting Street in downtown Charleston - a milestone years in the making for one of the Lowcountry's most impactful organizations.

What Is One80 Place's 573 Meeting Street Development?

One80 Place has been working to end and prevent homelessness in Charleston since 1984, serving more than 2,500 individuals annually across South Carolina. Their newest development at 573 Meeting Street is their first affordable housing project - a six-story, $44 million building in downtown Charleston combining 70 permanent affordable housing units with a 65-bed shelter for women and families, all supported by on-site case management, healthcare, and legal services. The June 26th ribbon cutting marked the official completion of a project that's been in the works for nearly a decade.

Photographing a Ribbon Cutting in Charleston, SC

Ribbon cuttings sound straightforward - a crowd, a speech, a moment with scissors - but the photography is all about timing and reading the room. The real images are usually in between: a handshake that lingers, someone in the back quietly tearing up, the way light hits a group of people who built something together and know it.

I'm primarily an editorial interior and architectural photographer based in Charleston, SC. But events like this are a reminder of why I picked up a camera in the first place. I love to pour into my community, and am so excited to be there for more impactful moments to come.
